Chinese Families
In Chinese people’s mind, families are holy. Therefore, they will never forget their own families wherever they go.
In the past, Chinese people preferred to live in extended families with many relatives. There were even families with four generations living under the same roof. A big family was like a small society, where there was a rigid hierarchy among family members, namely, the older the member was the higher his status was. In Chinese feudal society, dozens of or even more than one hundred people lived together; as a result it was vital to have rules to discipline those family members. It is said that a state has its law as a family has its rules. A family’s rules were the law of that family at that time, which made it acceptable for one to beat up his son or wife; and an outsider had no right to meddle in their affairs. What is more, lives, even marriages of the youths were controlled by their parents. The ancestral hall was built in each family to remember their forefathers. And each member of the family was obliged to do credit to the family.
But things are quite different now. Big feudal families have been disintegrated, and small families become the trend. In addition, people’s life styles have changed enormously; nevertheless, Chinese people’s affection attached to their families never weakens. And it is a common feeling for every Chinese that one misses his dear most on festive occasions.
